The three-time Grand Slam champion, who topped the Forbes list of the richest tennis players last year, announced that she already owns part of the shares of the women`s football team North Carolina Courage. Although founded in 2017, the team already has two championship titles in its window, and in its debut season it reached the finals of the national championship. In an interview with People. com The Japanese shared that the US National Women`s Football League (NSWL) has proposed several teams in which it could invest. After much deliberation, Osaka decided that Courage was best for her because the club`s values matched those she professed. During the US Open, she expressed her support for the Black Lives Matter movement and her solidarity with the victims of police violence in the United States. This, as well as the title she won in New York, made Sports Illustrated magazine among the five sports personalities of the year.
One of the main reasons for my decision is that from the very beginning I really liked the people who work in the club. Their interests and values are very similar to mine. Together we want to promote women`s sports and use the club`s popularity as a platform to support the development of the local community, Osaka commented.
It is not yet clear the financial parameters of the deal, as well as what part of the club`s ownership Osaka has acquired, but the management of Courage announced that the former No1 in the world will act as a strategic adviser.
We plan to do really unique and cool things together. I intend to take on the role of a strategic advisor in terms of promoting the brand, promoting women`s sports and attracting fans from the younger generation, as well as actively participating in solving some social problems, said the 23-year-old tennis player.
This is the second case in recent months in which one of the biggest names in women`s tennis decided to enter football. In the summer, Serena Williams announced that she and Billy Jean King are among the owners of the new women`s team in Los Angeles Angel City, which will debut in the National League in 2022. They will share ownership of the club with Hollywood stars Natalie Portman, Eva Longoria, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Garner.
