Hockey Hall of Famer Berje Salming has died.


The former Toronto quarterback has died at the age of 71.


In November, the Maple Leafs held a ceremony in honor of Salming before their 3-2 win against Vancouver. Berrier took part in a symbolic face-off before the game.


Salming was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.


Salming played for Toronto from 1973 to 1989. He also has one season with Detroit (1989/90). In total, he scored 787 (150 + 637) points in 1, 148 NHL games.


In 1996, he became the first Swede to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.


He holds the all-time leading Leafs defenseman in goals (148), assists (620) and points (768).
